Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Alyn was admitted to the Bar in Northern Ireland in 1979. In 1989 he, and his family, emigrated to Australia where he practised as a solicitor in Leeton, NSW, until moving to Canberra in 1992 where he has lived ever since.

In Northern Ireland Alyn, whilst in practice as a barrister, also worked as a research assistant in the Faculty of Law at Queen's University in the Servicing the Legal System programme.

He appeared in all levels of the court system in Northern Ireland.

For a period of time he was retained as an in-house counsel for a privately-owned banking house.

Following threats being made to his personal safety, as a consequence of appearing as a prosecutor in terrorist matters, Alyn left the bar to become a solicitor in general practice.

His firm was dissolved before he moved to Leeton, NSW, to work as a solicitor in general practice.

Following a family illness Alyh moved to Canberra in 1992 when he joined the ACT Bar. He was employed in the newly created ACT Office of Public Prosecutions. As a prosecutor he appeared in all levels of the ACT court system, the Federal Court and the High Court.

Alyn was the Assistant Director of the ACT DPP before moving to be a barrister in private practice mainly in the area of criminal law.

He was the chair of the ACT Liquor Licensing Board and the chair of the Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Industry Dispute Resolution Committee . He held a position on a government Council on The Family. He has served as a visiting tutor in the ANU Legal Workshop, a council member of the ACT Bar Association and as board member on various churches and private schools in the ACT. Alyn also works closely with the Professional Standards Director for the Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn.

Alyn practices in the criminal jurisdiction and coronials. He maintains an interest in school and church matters. He has a right of audience in all Austral ian State and Territories, with most of his work being in the ACT and NSW.
